ABOUT
Thanos Kokkinis was born in 1960 in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is a self-taught amateur photographer. He has studied biochemistry and he is a professional technical translator. He became interested in photography in 1980 during his studies in Germany. When he returned to Greece in 1990, photography became a second fiddle since there were other more pressing professional and family needs. He hibernated for many years until 2011 when he woke up quite accidentally in the field of photography. He spent much time studying the techniques of digital photography and processing software. He invests much time in studying the principles of photography and the work of past and current photographers always experimenting with new ideas. He steadily invests in photographic gear and his collection of cameras and lenses has grown to 8 cameras (digital and film) and over 80 lenses (modern and vintage). His pictures are taken with available light only without flash, filters or other gadgets.
What he loves best is humanistic street photography. His role models are Robert Doisneau, André Kertész, Josef Koudelka, Nicos Economopoulos, Konstantin Manos, Yiannis Yiasaris among others.
In addition to street photography he became interested in nature photography during the Covid 19 quarantines period, mainly macro and close-up. He experiments with multiple exposure (in-camera) and ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) and now and then he shoots black & white film.
He has been member Out of Focus Photography Club of Thessaloniki having left the club in 2021. He is member of the Greek Photographic Society, regular member of Street Photography France και Official Member of the Moments Collective International Photographers Network. He is also member of the Art in Photo Photography Group of Thessaloniki. He has participated in 9 collective exhibitions of the Out of Focus club and has presented two solo exhibitions (‘Streets and People’ and ‘Street Music’) in Thessaloniki, Greece. He has presented his photographic work via videoconferencing organized by the ‘Irida’ Photography Group of the Hestia of Pierides Muses (Katerini, Greece), the Greek Photographic Society (Athens) and the Art in Photo Group (Thessaloniki). He has participated h collective exhibitions of the Greek Photographic Society (Mytilene (2024) and Canea, Crete (2025)). He has also participated in the Moments Collective Annual Exhibition 2026 in Athens. He was a Finalist in the categories Visual Memory of Protest-Series and Vision-Singles of the Progressive Street Festival contest 2026 (his photographs will be exhibited in Livorno/Italy in the fall of 2026 and they will be included in the festival’s photobook). He participated in the Moments Collective Palaio Faliro Athens 2026 in Athens. His pics have been published in Fine Eye Magazine, Pixel Photo Magazine and the Annual Pentaxians Yearbook 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and Monochrome 2022, as well as in the photobook ‘Urban Tint’ of the False Mirror photography group of Thessaloniki, Greece. He has published 19 digital photobooks.
